PRESSRELEASE Stockholm 2006-03-01 New technique makes it possible to do digital post production work on film at the same time as it allows filmmakers to continue to shoot and play film the analogue way to get a higher resolution. This means increased possibilities for new creative ways to work on film at the same time as it lowers the costs. The new technique and its significance for the creative process was the subject on a seminar arranged by Nordisk Film Post Production in connection with this year’s film festival in Gothenburg. Peter Engelsson and Torulf Henriksen both from NFPP talked about the DI-process and the Cinevator and how they change the situation for film production. -The biggest advantage with the DI-process (Digital Intermediate Process) in comparison with the traditional post production work is the increased possibilities to work on pictures in a digital environment. For example colours and lights can be adjusted afterwards in a computer. This means bigger creative freedom for the filmmaker at the same time as the technique offers the chance to gain time and with that cost reductions, says Peter Engelsson. Director Anders Banke told the audience that the traditional post production work never was an alternative when they worked on the vampire film “Frostbite”, because it contains a vast amount of digital special effects. – “The DI-process let us choose from a bigger range of possibilities while working with the film and it became also economically possible to use the unusual 35mm 2-perf format”, says Banke. Cinematographer Jens Fischer who has been awarded several prices at the Guldbagge awards, and who last year got the price for best photo in “The Queen of Sheba’s Pearls”, talked about the new possibilities in grading as the biggest advantage with the new technique. –“A couple of years ago the result of digital post production often got a “video feeling”, but those problems are gone today” says Jens Fischer. A lengthy part in “The Queen of Sheba’s Pearls take place right after the second world war. The scenes are shot more or less without any filter or such techniques. Instead Jens Fischer created the right atmosphere in the grading process. - The DI-process simplifies the practise of filmmaking in films that contain a great deal of picture manipulation. Although the biggest gain with the process is the work you can do with the grading. It is important to understand the dramaturgical possibilities that the DI-process offers which can be taken into consideration already at the scriptwriting stage”, says post production supervisor Peter Bengtsson.
